Some IT companies are not allowing personal mail to their
employees – Gross violation of human
rights:-
CHENNAI: Hundreds of
rakhis, letters and articles sent by speed post to IT companies in
Sholinganallur, Perungudi and Thoraipakkam were returned to India Post offices after
the companies refused to accept them, saying they do not have the men or
machinery to distribute the items to staff.
Confirming the incident, postmaster general Merwin Alexander criticised IT firms for what he described as a "gross violation of human rights". "How could companies stop their employees from receiving letters and rakhis?" he asked. "Some postmen reported that when they go to deliver post at IT companies, they are treated with scant respect and are asked to leave," he said, adding that his department will hold talks with the IT majors next week. "They should cooperate with us, if not as their bounden duty to their employees, then at least as part of what they call 'corporate social responsibility'."
India Post officials said at least 4,500 letters, some with credit and debit cards, greetings and more than 1,500 rakhis are lying in the Sholinganallur, Perungudi and Thoraipakkam post offices.
"I wear the India Post uniform and have an identity card but security guards at the companies, most of whom speak only Hindi, refuse to allow me inside. The guards say they are acting on the instructions of company officials," said a postman from Perungudi.
Paresh Khatri, a software professional, said his sister sent a rakhi to him by speed post on Saturday but it had not reached him even after five days. "An postal employee called me on Thursday and asked me to collect the parcel from the post office because my office does not allow postmen to deliver mails or packages," he said.
An official with a leading IT company said his firm does not intentionally stop mail from being delivered to employees. "If at all some mails or gifts have not been delivered, it was probably due to a wrong address," he said. //times of
Consumer forum imposes fine of Rs.5000 on chief post master
for deficiency of service
In his petition, Pandey claimed that he was unemployed and had applied against an advertisement of the above job. The last date of submission of form was February 18, 2009 and he had sent his form through speed post on February 16. Pandey claimed that his application form reached the irrigation department on February 20 and was not entertained. The postal department returned his form with a note of refusal. The claimant sought Rs 50,000 from the postal department as damages for not delivering the application on time and the mental agony caused by it.
Appearing before the Forum, the postal department contradicted the charges of deficiency of services. In a written submission, the department claimed that letter was delivered on February 20. As per norms of speed post services, the letter is to be delivered within 72 hours of the date of registry. The department said that Pandey's complaint be rejected as the application was delivered within due course of time. Forum president LV Singh and member Ganesh Prasad in their order observed that speed post must be delivered within 48 hours but even if the claim of 72 hours was considered then application should have been delivered on February 19. However, the marking of refusal was done on February 20 at 12.45 pm, which indicated that the application form reached its destination on the fourth day.
The Forum said that it was a fit case of deficiency of service and liable to be awarded. The forum awarded the complaint and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on chief post master. // times of India-kanpur//

Young Czech writer's letter to water triumphs in UPU’s 2013
International Letter-Writing Competition.
Fifteen-year-old Daniel Korcak, from Ostrava ,
Czech Republic , has won the
UPU's 42nd International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People with his
letter to the central European river the Oder .
Recalling the current International Year
of Water Cooperation, the 2013 contest asked budding writers to explain why
water is a precious resource.
"I figured
that many candidates would write to a person, so I decided to write my letter
to water,” says the gold-medal winner, who captivated the international jury
with his simple, creative and innovative prose.
"In the
river you create, we bathe, fish, children play with you when building stone
dams, athletes on boats struggle against your power, and many seek peace and
quiet in your whisper… near your river, there is your sister, healing water,
which… waits to be carried to the nearby spa where it helps heal our
ailments," wrote Daniel.
The jury said the
Czech’s writing gently brought home the need to respect water to ensure
sustainable use. "Daniel reminds us just how much we depend on water, too
often taken for granted. His letter, tender and universal in its appeal,
portrays the Oder as a symbol of water
everywhere," declared the jury. "Describing the life cycle of the Oder , he personifies water, which mimics our journey as
human beings and therefore deserves our utmost respect.”
Congratulating
this year’s winners, UPU
Director General Bishar A. Hussein said: “Communication
is at the heart of the postal activity and, in a sea of digital messages, it remains critical for
young people to understand the importance of the written word and the
structured composition and recognize the emotions and call to action good
writing can elicit. Postal services support literacy and communication, and we
are delighted that our competition touches so many young people.”
An estimated 1.5
million young people from 60 countries participated in this 42nd letter-writing
contest, which aims to raise awareness of the role postal services play in our
societies, help young people develop their skills in composition and the
ability to express their thoughts.

goes to 14-year-old Nazifa Farhat Hye from Sylhet , Bangladesh
The jury liked
the clear and simple style Nazifa used to show that money can save no-one in
such a situation, illustrating that water is every bit as precious as life
itself.
The bronze medal
goes to 13-year-old Gabija Petrauskaité from Sventoji , Lithuania

Government
introduces electronic postal order to help NRIs seek information under RTI Act
CHENNAI: The
government has introduced an electronic postal order to help non-resident
Indians seek information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Diplomatic sources at the Indian embassy inRiyadh told TOI over telephone on Monday that the department of personnel and department of posts had recently launched a service called e-IPO(Electronic Indian Postal Order) to allow the NRIs to purchase an Indian postal order electronically by paying the fee online at http://www.epostoffice.gov.in.
"This facility has been provided for Indian citizens abroad to enable them to purchase a postal order electronically to seek information under the RTI Act, 2005," sources said.
The user needs to register at the website. He or she must select the ministry or department from where he or she desires to seek the information under the RTI Act. The e-IPO so generated can be used to seek information from that ministry or department only.
A printout of the e-IPO is required to be attached with the RTI application. If the RTI application is being filed electronically, the e-IPO should be attached.

Unique
Identification Authority of India, UIDAI has reiterated that the target of 60 croreAadhaar enrolments will be achieved by 2014.
More than 40 crore 29 lakh Aadhaarnumbers
have been issued till date and the process is continuing at a healthy pace.
Only in the month of July, 2013, about Two Crore Aadhaar numbers
have been generated. It has also announced the setting up of permanent
enrolment centres in various states to enroll
residents who have been either left out in earlier enrolment drives or for
those who wish to update their Aadhaar data.
Recently, UIDAI also unveiled three new Aadhaar-Enabled
Services viz.
Authentication services using Iris, Authentication service using One Time Pin
and eKYC ( Electronic-Know Your Customer)
service, all of which have been developed to empower residents to
authenticate anytime, anywhere using a digital platform. Nearly seven months after the launch of Direct Benefits Transfer
(DBT), the government has allocated about Rs 250 crore on various welfare programmes and made around 32 lakhpayments

A press release of PIB Mumbai said that those who missed the deadline of August 5 can still file their income tax returns...
IT Department urges all those tax payers to file their IT Returns, who missed even the extended deadline of August 5.
The Income Tax Department has urged all those tax payers who have not filed their Income Tax Returns, even by the extended deadline of August 5, 2013, to file their returns at the earliest to keep away unavoidable difficulties.
Those who missed the deadline of August 5, 2013 can still file their IT Returns. If all your taxes are paid and there are no refunds to be claimed it is quite straight and simple. The IT return can be filed before March 31, 2014. If the return is not filed by March 31, 2014, there will be a penalty of Rs 5000 that will be levied. Those with tax dues will have to pay late payment fee leviable for every month of delay since April 2013.
All those with total income of Rs 5 lakh and above and all those having foreign assets have to mandatorily file their IT returns online. More than 1.23 crore tax payers filed their returns online this year. Those with total income less than Rs 5 lakh can file their returns off-line.
While Income Tax Department gives taxpayers certain grace period to file their returns, there are certain disadvantages associated with late filing of IT returns. Those who file their returns late, can not modify their returns if there are any mistakes. They also can not carry forward any short term and long term losses.
The Department keeps a close watch on transactions and possesses necessary tools to detect tax evasions. A person defaulting in filing returns of income could be liable for prosecution u/s. 276CC of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Conviction may result in rigorous imprisonment for a term not less than six months but which may extend to seven years and a fine, if the tax liability which has been evaded exceeds Rs 25 lakhs. In other cases ( tax evasion below Rs.25,00,000/-), a defaulter would be liable for conviction for not less than three months but which may extend to two years and a fine.
It may be recalled that recently, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, New Delhi sentenced a tax payer to six months imprisonment in one assessment year and one year imprisonment in subsequent Assessment Year for repeating the offence of not filing return of income.
